The work is done, the unit is humming, you submit your application. And then you get a rejection. The Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec heat pump subsidy remains a generous program, but it comes with conditions, and most rejections are due to details that should be addressed before purchase, not after.<\/p>\n

The terms and conditions of the LogisVert program for residential customers<\/a> specify that assistance reaches $50 per 1,000 BTU\/hr increment at minus 8 degrees for an ENERGY STAR certified unit, and $120 per increment for a cold climate model. The difference between the two rates amounts to thousands of dollars on a complete system. Here’s what derails an application, in the order we see it happen.<\/p>\n

Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec Heat Pump Subsidy: The Certification Trap<\/h2>\n

This has become the most frequent cause of rejection since November 26, 2025. From that date, only ENERGY STAR certified heat pumps are eligible. A high-performance but uncertified unit is not eligible for anything, regardless of its price or the seller’s arguments.<\/p>\n

A second, lesser-known filter: the outdoor unit must have a nominal capacity of at least 12,000 BTU\/hr in cooling mode. Small units intended for a single room fall below this threshold and are excluded from the program.<\/p>\n

The third point, which costs poorly advised homeowners the most: the difference between a standard ENERGY STAR model and a cold climate rated model. The rate increases from $50 to $120 per 1,000 BTU\/hr increment at minus 8 degrees. On a 30,000 BTU\/hr system at this temperature, the difference exceeds $2,000. Before signing, verify the exact model using Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec’s eligible heat pump search tool. Not the brand: the model, with its precise combination of indoor and outdoor units.<\/p>\n

Error Number Two: An Invoice Without an RBQ License Number<\/h2>\n

This one is brutal, because it’s not up to you.<\/p>\n

The company performing the work must be registered with the Qu\u00e9bec Enterprise Registrar and hold the appropriate licenses from the R\u00e9gie du b\u00e2timent (RBQ). And its license number must appear on the invoice you submit to Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec. Not in an email, not on a business card: on the invoice.<\/p>\n

The required subcategories for installing a wall-mounted or central heat pump are specific. You need 15.1, 15.7, or 15.8, combined with 15.9 or 15.10. Electrical work also requires subcategory 16. A contractor offering a turnkey service must hold all these licenses, unless they have a general contractor’s license allowing them to subcontract.<\/p>\n

You can verify everything for free in the R\u00e9gie du b\u00e2timent’s public register of license holders<\/a>. It takes two minutes and saves you a four-figure rejection.<\/p>\n

Error Number Three: Replacing Only One Part of the System<\/h2>\n

The program funds the installation of a complete system, not a disguised repair.<\/p>\n

The following are not eligible: replacing only a coil, replacing only an indoor unit, replacing only an outdoor unit. If your outdoor unit has failed and you keep the indoor one, there is no subsidy.<\/p>\n

Two other exclusions are worth noting. The installation of indoor units outside the insulation envelope, in other words, in an unheated attic or crawl space, disqualifies the application. And the installation or replacement of a central heat pump in a dwelling with a geothermal system is also not eligible.<\/p>\n

The ENERGY STAR line must be verified model by model<\/h3>\n

A trap worth naming, because it affects very popular ranges in Quebec. Within the same brand and series, some capacities are ENERGY STAR certified and others are not. It also happens that an entire series, positioned on price, carries none.<\/p>\n

Open the technical sheet of the proposed model and look for the ENERGY STAR line. If it’s blank for the chosen capacity, there’s no subsidy, regardless of the performance displayed elsewhere on the page. On a 24,000 BTU\/hr cold climate rated unit, the lost aid far exceeds the savings made by choosing the entry-level model.<\/p>\n

Error Number Four: Claiming a Unit Replaced After an Insurance Claim<\/h3>\n

A compressor failing under warranty, an outdoor unit destroyed by damage covered by your home insurance: the subsequent replacement is not eligible. The program’s logic is to fund voluntary energy improvements, not to double compensation.<\/p>\n

The same reasoning applies to combining benefits. The same measure cannot be funded twice by public funds. Contrary to what you read on some sites that pile up amounts to impress, mechanically adding all announced aids does not guarantee your check. And the federal Greener Homes program, which still appears in many articles, is no longer accepting new applications.<\/p>\n

What you can combine, however, does exist. An application that includes several energy efficiency measures is eligible for a 5 percent bonus on the total amount. And for multi-unit buildings located in certain areas, a bonus of $100 per 1,000 BTU\/hr at minus 8 degrees is added to the rate, bringing the payment to $220 per increment for installations made from June 15, 2026.<\/p>\n

Error Number Five: Neglecting Paperwork<\/h3>\n

Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec requires proof of ownership, either the municipal tax bill or the first page of the deed of sale. It requires the purchase and installation invoice, which must contain a precise list of information: invoice number and date, installation date, customer name, installation address, company name, GST and QST numbers, RBQ license number, description of work, AHRI or ENERGY STAR number, and cost of work.<\/p>\n

Finally, it requires a clear photo of the outdoor unit’s nameplate, showing the model number and serial number. One photo per model installed.<\/p>\n

Our advice on this point is very practical: take the photo on the day of installation, while scaffolding or snow doesn’t yet block access, and store it with the invoice. The number of applications delayed because the owner has to go out in February to clear a unit to photograph a nameplate is astounding.<\/p>\n

The Calculation, So You Can Do It Yourself<\/h2>\n

Many homeowners discover the actual amount of their aid when they receive the check. However, it can be calculated in advance, and it’s worth doing so before choosing between two quotes.<\/p>\n

The rate is not based on the nominal capacity prominently displayed on the box. It is based on the heating capacity at minus 8 degrees, a data point found in the certified technical sheet of the exact indoor and outdoor unit combination. Two units sold as 24,000 BTU\/hr can show very different capacities at this temperature, and thus qualify for very different amounts.<\/p>\n

Take this capacity, divide by 1,000, multiply by $50 if the unit is simply ENERGY STAR certified, by $120 if it is rated for cold climate. You’ll get a reliable estimate, to be confirmed with the LogisVert portal calculator.<\/p>\n

This calculation also makes the logic of the largest possible unit absurd. Contrary to intuition, oversizing does not profitably maximize the subsidy: you pay more for a unit that will cycle too short, dehumidify poorly in summer, and wear out faster, for an additional aid that never compensates for the price difference. Proper sizing remains proper sizing, subsidy or not.<\/p>\n

A final word on deadlines. The program imposes a window for submitting the application after the work is completed. After this deadline, the aid is lost, without recourse. Note the installation date in your calendar on the same day and set a reminder well before the deadline. This is the kind of perfectly avoidable loss that occurs every year, often to people who had all the documents in hand.<\/p>\n

What the Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec Heat Pump Subsidy is Worth in August 2026<\/h2>\n

One last warning, and it applies to everything you read on the subject. LogisVert’s rates change several times a year. The measure combining very high-efficiency heat pumps and caulking work was withdrawn on August 25, 2025. The certification threshold moved in November 2025. The multi-unit bonus arrived in June 2026.<\/p>\n

The amounts cited in this text are those in effect in August 2026, taken directly from official pages. Before committing to an expense, re-verify at the source. A contractor who guarantees you a precise amount in writing before even identifying the model and its capacity at minus 8 degrees is promising you something that is not theirs to give.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
