One compressor, up to five rooms: the R32 Multi-zone

The multi-zone principle is simple: a single outdoor unit powers several indoor units, each controlled independently. Gree’s R32 line accepts up to five indoor units, chosen from seven different appliance types. On properties where municipal regulations limit outdoor placements, this is often the only practical configuration.

One Outdoor Unit, Fewer Installation Constraints

Each additional outdoor unit requires finding a location, respecting property line setbacks, and planning for a screen. In Bois-des-Filion, the entire facade is off-limits for appliances; in Rosemère, six meters from the rear line and three from the side lines are required. Installing multiple outdoor units on a typical lot quickly becomes impossible.

Multi-zone systems solve this upfront: one unit outside, multiple rooms treated inside. Indoor units are powered by the outdoor unit, eliminating the need to bring electrical power to each one.

The consistency of values from one capacity to another is characteristic of multi-zone systems: the outdoor unit determines the efficiency, not the combination of indoor units selected.

Number of connectable indoor units based on the outdoor unit
Outdoor unitIndoor units
18,000 BTU/h2
24,000 BTU/h2 to 3
30,000 BTU/h2 to 4
36,000 BTU/h2 to 4
42,000 BTU/h2 to 5

This is the point quotes often gloss over: “up to five zones” only applies to the 42,000 BTU model. On a 24,000 BTU unit, we’re talking about three heads maximum. The number of rooms to be treated determines the size of the outdoor unit, not the other way around.

What to Consider Before Choosing a Multi-Zone System

A multi-zone system isn’t always the right answer. When only one room needs treatment, a single unit costs less and is easier to repair. When all rooms need treatment and the house has ducts, a Flexx central system treats the air throughout the entire house, including filtration and humidification, which no wall-mounted unit does.

The multi-zone system fits in between: multiple rooms, no ducts, only one outdoor location available. G10 Inverter technology, intelligent defrost, compact design, A2L sensor, and Wi-Fi included.

Frequently Asked Questions

From two to five, depending on the size of the outdoor unit: two on the 18,000 BTU, two to three on the 24,000, two to four on the 30,000 and 36,000, and two to five on the 42,000. Indoor units can be chosen from seven types.

Yes, each indoor unit can be set independently. However, they share the same compressor, and therefore the same general operating mode.

A central system treats air throughout the entire house via ducts and allows for filtration, humidification, and air exchange. A multi-zone system is for homes without ducts where multiple rooms need treatment.
